Grantee: University of Illinois, Champaign, IL, USA
Project Lead: William T. Greenough, Ph.D.
Grant Title: Morphological Plasticity in Normal & Schizophrenic Brain: A Quantitative Golgi & Electron Microscopy Study of Postmortem Tissue
Program Area: Bridging Brain, Mind & Behavior
Grant Type: Collaborative Activity Award
Year Awarded: 2000
Project Summary:
The collaboration has carried out extensive studies that examine the brain structure of schizophrenic subjects and normal controls. While a number of laboratories have reported structural brain changes in schizophrenics, it is difficult to interpret the meaning of anatomical alterations. To relate the observed brain changes to the course of the disease, it is necessary to establish how structural changes are effected by many factors, including postmortem treatment of the brains, the donor’s age at onset of disease, age at death, gender, medication, and specific symptoms.
